Control room
1992
“Control room” is an installation-performance that referred to forms of control exercised by
constituted power. At the entrance to the large space of the Via Farini gallery in Milan, a blow-up
reproducing a view of the interior of a 'control room' was displayed.
Inside the space, a
video showed an expert talking about certain international secret service operations and the
presence of freemasonry in institutions.
On one wall of the space hung four sculpture-objects,
like scrutinising presences. On another wall were four portable players, equipped with loudspeakers,
continuously playing readings of Harold Pinter's "American football".
Two powerful loudspeakers
were hung at opposite corners, just below the ceiling of the large room. When the performance began,
a couple of dancers mimicked a typical police search by moving among the audience.
Meanwhile another performer, using a long rope and a series of rings hanging on the walls, slowly wove a web that separated the audience and forced them into tight spaces. Throughout the performance - which lasted about half an hour - a stream of sound, consisting mainly of high frequencies at high volume, saturated the entire space.
